What are we doing?

buildingSMART Norway is a neutral interest organization that improves the digital flow of information in the construction industry by participating in the development of the open international buildingSMART standards.

We work to ensure that these standards are implemented in software and adopted in the Norwegian construction industry and public administration, throughout the entire value chain and in the whole lifecycle. We are one of buildingSMART International's 33 subject-neutral and non-commercial national chapters, established in 1997.

To create the construction industry of tomorrow, buildingSMART works through our members to ensure the use of building information models (BIM), digital twins, and data interoperability becomes the norm. Data should drive decisions throughout the lifecycle, and the information about the actual components of the building should be what we manage by. To meet new requirements for climate, environment, and energy performance in buildings, material use must change, material data must be catalogued digitally, building materials must be reused, and planning needs to become smarter and flow from phase to phase.

Data is information, and data about all individual elements in a building is important at various times throughout the different phases of the building's lifespan. To maintain the data over time, and not lose valuable information if individual companies go bankrupt or buildings change ownership, the construction industry must ensure that the digital systems implemented are based on open standards.

Who are we for?

buildingSMART Norway is a membership-based organisation. Our member companies work in the construction, civil engineering, and real estate sectors, representing the entire value chain. We have members who are consulting engineers, clients, software providers, contractors, manufacturers, architects, and associations (see the full membership list here). All activities arranged by the bSN administration are financed through membership fees.

buildingSMART Norway's professional network aims to create activities that contribute to a more efficient industry. The focus is on open standards from a lifecycle perspective, from design, through the construction site and operational phase, to renovation and possible decommissioning. In addition, we are actively involved in a range of sustainability projects and circular initiatives to contribute actively to the green shift.

Membership benefits include:

  • Access to a professional network, experts, and knowledge;

  • Opportunity to participate in all member meetings across all bSN domains and working groups;

  • Opportunity to activate and/or lead a domain and/or a working group and be part of the Interdisciplinary User Forum TBF;

  • Opportunity to participate in ad-hoc projects with our partners;

  • Opportunity to contribute directly or indirectly to national and international standardisation work;

  • Access to best practice examples and concrete experience with openBIM;

  • Right to use the buildingSMART Norway Chapter logo on websites, in presentations, etc.;

  • Voting rights at the annual meeting of buildingSMART Norway.
